New Delhi: A 20-year-old Indian man has confessed to raping and killing at least nine girls aged between three and seven in New Delhi, the capital, and three other cities over the past two years, police said on Wednesday.

The case spotlights the number of young children who go missing every year in India and raises the question of whether the police have sufficient resources to investigate such brutal sex crimes.

The confession followed Monday’s arrest of the man on charges of raping and killing a three-year-old girl on November 11 in a slum area of Gurgaon.

“He used to first break the legs of the victims before attempting rape,” said Subhash Boken, an assistant sub-inspector and public relations officer with the Gurugram police. “Then he would murder them.”

A court on Tuesday granted police remand of the man for eight days, Boken said, adding that he did not yet have a lawyer. Reuters could not reach him in prison to seek comment.

Police have linked three cases of dead children to his statement and are investigating the rest, Boken added.

Four of the cases are in Delhi, three in Gurugram, and one each in Jhansi and Gwalior.

He has not been formally charged and police often claim success in solving crimes before a defendant has had his day in court.

The man, who was unemployed apart from occasional work as a daily labourer, said he mostly targeted community kitchens such as those distributing free food to the needy.

He would target young girls who went to pick up food, offering them sweets or money, and abduct them, Boken quoted him as having told police.

The man, who was arrested in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, committed his last crime in Gurugram while visiting his sister in the same slum area where the victim lived, police said.

Indian newspapers often carry reports of brutal rapes and murders, many involving children, despite the adoption this year of tougher laws, some of which provide for capital punishment for the rape of children younger than 12.

“It is very unfortunate that such cases are still happening in India, despite the government framing a law and approving the death penalty for rape,” said Priti Mahara, an official of child rights organisation CRY.

“The police, government officials and society at large need to support the victims and their families.”

New PAN card rules come into effect from next month

New PAN card rules come into effect from next month

The new Income Tax department notification says that individuals like the managing director, director, partner, trustee, author, founder, karta, CEO or office-bearer of such entities should also apply for a PAN card, in case they don’t have one, within 31 May of the next financial year.

New Delhi: To prevent tax evasion, the Income Tax department has changed PAN card rules with effect from 5 December making it mandatory for all entities doing business worth over Rs 2.5 lakh in a financial year to have a Permanent Account Number. According to a new notification issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, all entities which made financial transactions of at least Rs 2.5 lakh in a financial year must apply for a PAN card till May 31 of the next financial year.

5 things to know about new PAN card rules:

1. “In the case of a person, being a resident, other than an individual, which enters into a financial transaction of an amount aggregating to two lakh fifty thousand rupees or more in a financial year and which has not been allotted any permanent account number, on or before the 31st day of May immediately following such financial year,” says the new amendment in Income Tax Rules, 1962.

2. The new income tax rule is not meant for individual taxpayers who are not associated with such entities.

3. The new I-T department notification also says that individuals like the managing director, director, partner, trustee, author, founder, karta, chief executive officer or office-bearer of such entities should also apply for a PAN card, in case they don’t have one, within 31 May of the next financial year.

4. “In the case of a person, who is the managing director, director, partner, trustee, author, founder, karta, chief executive officer, principal officer or office-bearer of the person referred to in clause (v) or any person competent to act on behalf of the person referred to in clause (v) and who has not been allotted any permanent account number, on or before the 31st day of May immediately following the financial year in which the person referred to in clause (v) enters into financial transaction specified therein,” reads the amendment.

5. Nangia Advisors LLP Partner Suraj Nangia said that now resident entities shall have to obtain PAN even if the total sales or turnover or gross receipts are not or are not likely to exceed Rs 5 lakh in a financial year. “This will help the income tax department track financial transactions, broaden the tax base and prevent tax evasion,” said the tax expert.

T-Series is set to become number one channel on YouTube

T-Series is set to become number one channel on YouTube

Indian music label and film production major T-Series is set to become the most-subscribed channel on YouTube. It is expected to surpass PewDiePie, the channel belonging to Swedish gamer and jokester Felix Kjellberg, in a few days.
Currently, T-Series is seeing a monthly subscriber growth of three million per month. It is among the most-watched YouTube channels in the world with total subscribers across the YouTube network at 114 million. What is remarkable is that it had just 30 million subscribers at the start of the year.
The rise of the Indian music label has shaken the hegemony of personalities like Kjellberg or Justin Bieber. In fact, numbers show that five out of the 20 most-viewed videos of T-Series are non-film songs.
T-Series’ other most-subscribed channels are T-Series Bhakti and T-Series Apna Punjab, with 10 million subscribers each. The company is banking on an innovative programming strategy, which appeals to the Indian diaspora worldwide.

“The T-Series team has been innovative in their programming strategy on YouTube. It optimises release cycles and formats that works on YouTube and focusses on programming and engagement,” Satya Raghavan, head of entertainment, YouTube India, said.
Content-wise, T-Series has a total of 29 channels across Indian languages (Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Tamil, Haryanvi, Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati), and uploads key music genres such as Bollywood/film music, pop, devotional and classics. It is focussed on Indian content and if its expected milestone is reached, it will become the first non-English channel to reach the number one spot on YouTube.

“T-Series has also been tapping into the creativity of independent YouTube creators and leveraging their influence to amplify their releases. It partners with creators to produce song and dance covers, and also sign key YouTube music talent as artists such as Shirley Seitia,” Raghavan said.
But what does T-Series’s phenomenal growth on YouTube mean for music labels in India, especially when it comes to revenues? “Though from the revenue standpoint it doesn’t benefit music labels a great deal, from an audience standpoint, it has a massive impact in terms of brand and promotion,” said Jehil Thakkar, partner, Deloitte India. “Being prominent on a platform like YouTube, or being an important part of a content ecosystem on any of the social platforms, has a huge multiplier effect for any content company, both in terms of direct and indirect revenue,” Thakkar added.

These Xiaomi phones will no longer receive software update: Check if your phone is on the list

Xiaomi has been one of the top-selling smartphone brands in Asia and while its smartphones have been doing well in terms of sales figures, the Chinese smartphone brand is also known for offering timely software updates as well as support for around 4-5 years old smartphones. Moreover, during the MIUI 10 launch event, Xiaomi said that they will be offering support for old smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi Mix, Mi Note 2, Mi 5 and more.

However, the company has now announced a list of smartphone which won’t be getting any software updates from now on, especially after the MIUI 10 Global ROM update. This means that the upcoming MIUI 11 update, which is yet to be announced by Xiaomi, won’t be coming to these smartphones.

The Xiaomi smartphones which won’t be getting the MIUI 11 update include Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Xiaomi Mi 5, Xiaomi Mi 4, Mi 4C and Mi 4S. For the unknown, the Xiaomi Mi 5 has been included in the later batches of MIUI 10 Global ROM rollout.

It should be noted that the Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3 Pro (Redmi Note 3 in India) will get MIUI 10.2 China Stable ROM release as their last update while the Mi 4, Mi 4S and Mi 4C will get MIUI 10.1 China Stable ROM (expected in January 2019) as their last software update.

Coming to the Beta updates, the MIUI 8.9.14 was the last MIUI Beta update for Xiaomi’s Mi 4, Mi 4S and Mi 4C while the MIUI China Beta 8.11.22 is going to be the last beta update for Redmi Note 3 Pro and Mi 5.
